Winter diets and habitat selection of sympatric blue sheep(Pseudois nayaur) and red deer(Cervus elaphus) in Helan Mountains,China
The habitat selection and diet composition of blue sheep(Pseudois nayaur)and red deer (Cervus elaphus)in Helan Mountains,in China,were examined from November 2003 to February 2005.Despite the overlap in habitat that was partly,habitat use between blue sheep and red deer separated significantly.Blue sheep preferred montane savanna,with high degree of slope,further distance to water resource and bare rock.While red deer selected winter habitat with montane conifer forest,with flat slope,less distance to water resource,further distance to human disturbance and further distance to bare rock.Microhistological analysis was used to study the diet composition of the two ungulates.The diet of blue sheep was significantly different from that of red deer for proportions of forage categories.Blue sheep fed primarily on shrubs(36.7%)and graminodis (23.1%),while the diet of red deer was dominated by shrubs(43.6%),followed by tree category (25.6%).Contrary to blue sheep,red deer chose to avoid foraging most herbaceous plant.
