  During the analysis of one thousand cDNA sequences from silkworm pupae, it has been found that about 3% mRNA sequence is non-coding mRNA with a polyU sequence at 5terminal which is complementary to the polyA sequence at 3terminal, forming a particular cucurbit-shaped secondary structure which still has a 2-80nt polyA terminal. This class of non-coding mRNA with a polyU sequence at 5terminal and a polyA sequence at 3 terminal is found for the first time, and has the characteristic of small nucleolar RNA(snoRNA). It belongs to a novel class of mRNA-like snoRNA, having similar C box and D box as those in archaebacteria, with complementary sequence to rRNA at the upstream and downstream of D box. It reveals that AUG box is present at the loop-stem binding site of the secondary structure of this class of snoRNA and CAT box is present at both ends of transcriptional region of snoRNA. About 74% of this class of snoRNA is transcribed from genome in a translation-like mode in that it begins from ATG and end at TAA. The existence of this novel family of non-coding mRNA was verified by RT-PCR and Southern blotting.……
