Pathogenic Fungi Associated with Camellia sinensis and Allied Species

  Camellia Linnaeus(Theaceae) species are of important commercial and ornamental value,especially C.sinensis(tea plant).Camellia production is heavily affected by a number diseases caused by fungal pathogens,such as anthracnose,gray blight and ring spot.During the past five years,we carried out an investigation of fungi associated with diseases of C.sinensis and allied Camellia spp.in42 locations in the main cultivation provinces in China,and 1 042 fungal strains were isolated using single spore isolation and tissue isolation methods.ITS analyses of these strains suggested that they belonged to at least 162 taxa in 68 genera,38 families,20 orders,and the top five dominant genera were Colletotrichum(25.7%),Diaporthe(10.5%),Pestalotiopsis(10.7%),Setophoma(8.3%) and Cladosporium(6.6%).Further morphological examinations and multi-locus phylogenetic analyses were employed to identify fungi in the above five genera to species level,which revealed 11 Colletotrichum spp.,9 Diaporthe spp.,15 Pestalotiopsis spp.,7 Setophoma spp.and 9 Cladosporium spp.associated with plant diseases of Camellia spp.,including 20 novel species.This study revealed a high proportion of unrecorded and undescribed species on C.sinensis,which increased the known species associated with tea plant from 280 to 384 species,a significant improvement of our understanding on the diversity of fungal pathogens on Camellia species.……
